i'm gonna do that 30-day writing meme, except i don't actually want to do this for 30 days, so i'm just gonna answer it all at once.

1. Tell us about your favorite writing project/universe that you've worked with and why.
i have a lot of different universes floating around, and i really really enjoy developing all of them, but for my favorite... that's a tough one, haha. it changes a lot. i guess right now i've been chewing on this sort of horror-type thing about these robot ladies, which i haven't really developed beyond that, but i just like the atmosphere of it and like thinking about it. i also enjoy working on mitch and zoey's game with [livejournal.com profile] tigerboat.

2. How many characters do you have? Do you prefer males or females?
shitloads (i promise i'm going to talk about them soon). and i really have no preference for men or women; when i come up with a character i tend to just have a gut feeling about their gender and just go with whatever that is, which, for me, it's pretty much the same thing as having a gut feeling about what a character should look like. it's not actually connected to anything.

3. How do you come up with names, for characters (and for places if you're writing about fictional places)?
uhh pretty much thinking of names i like and thinking about the character having that name and other characters calling them that name, seeing if it feels right.

4. Tell us about one of your first stories/characters!
when i was a kid, i used to "write" stories by pretty much just babbling at my parents and having them write down what i was saying, since this was before i could write very well. i made this one comedy about my cat, deke, which i creatively named "deke is a cat" (i think i was actually trying to be ~ironic~ or something, which i'd picked up from my brother), and i also made one about wild animals running from a hunter or something called "the fox and the hunter." i don't remember anything about deke is a cat (just that it was really bizarre), but i do remember that fox and the hunter was actually all right up until the end where i didn't know what to do so i was just like AND THEN THE ANIMALS BEAT UP THE HUNTER AND WENT HOME TO EAT CAKE BUT THEN THEY GOT IN TROUBLE BECAUSE THEY FORGOT TO EAT DINNER FIRST, THE END
at least it's a cute sort of... kids' perspective sort of ending or something, haha.

5. By age, who is your youngest character? Oldest? How about “youngest” and “oldest” in terms of when you created them?
uhhhhhh... oh, i guess this nameless little girl for this flash movie idea, who's about 9 or so. oldest is commander packheat.
other oldest is... idk some dumb character i made as a little kid, and youngest is the main character for the roboladies thing. i think.

6. Where are you most comfortable writing? At what time of day? Computer or good ol' pen and paper?
well, when i'm developing my characters/worlds/etc, 99% of the time, i don't write it down. i have a horrible memory, but for some reason i'm really good at remembering my ideas in detail (and also i just hate writing down ideas for some reason, it's a chore). when i DO get around to "writing" characters then it's through art and comics, which is usually done at my laptop in my room.

7. Do you listen to music while you write? What kind? Are there any songs you like to relate/apply to your characters?
when i draw, i just put my playlist on random. and actually, rather than relate songs to CHARACTERS, i relate them to, like... scenes. individual pic ideas, rather than the characters themselves. haha

8. What's your favorite genre to write? To read?
WELL I APPARENTLY REALLY LIKE WRITING CRIME FIGHTING STORIES SINCE ALL MY STORIES AS A KID REVOLVED AROUND FIGHTING CRIME AND NOW I HAVE THE AGENTS
I JUST REALLY HATE CRIME MAN!!!

but really, i feel happiest when i'm writing things that aren't totally serious. not necessarily comedies, since i love having sad/touching stuff, but just things that give me room to have weirdness thrown in as well. i really made the mistake in the past by trying to make my stories about my old chars (tal, belle, etc) like ULTRA SERIOUS and OH GOD and it was suffocating; i never wanted to work on them and never did anything with them for ages. when i came up with the agents, it was a very "oh, durr, why haven't i been doing this" moment for me.

i like things that are in the same vein; humorous, but still sad/touching. david sedaris' stories are a perfect example of what i mean, as well as the earthbound series, hotel dusk, and futurama. i also really go for noir, and comedic sci-fi (serious sci-fi bores me to tears, but when it has a sense of humor then suddenly i'm like YESSSSSSSSSS for some reason. i just love the shit out of funny sci-fi kdfjhs).

9. How do you get ideas for your characters? Describe the process of creating them.
"HEY I SHOULD MAKE A CHARACTER LIKE THIS HAHAHAHA"

10. What are some really weird situations your characters have been in? Everything from serious canon scenes to meme questions counts!
BEING AROUND CRAZY WEIRDOS
and man, i've been forgetting about RB. hahahaha, RB himself is just one massive (massive) weird situation.

11. Who is your favorite character to write? Least favorite?
i really like mitch, who tiger and i created; he's very complex and layered, i think. for characters who are 100% mine, i like belle, agent speedjump, and agent manbeauty (who never even changes expressions or says much of anything at all, but that's part of what makes thinking of him entertaining, to me).

i hate saying "least favorite" since i love developing my characters and thinking about them, but i do have characters who are difficult to develop. zoey (tiger and i again) is one of those, because of... various reasons idk if tiger cares about me revealing them or not, but she can just be a bit of a challenge to answer for, despite how much i love her as a character. max (mine) is also a little hard.

12. In what story did you feel you did the best job of worldbuilding? Any side-notes on it you'd like to share?
haha, none of what i'm working on is finished, so i don't think i can really answer.

13. What's your favorite culture to write, fictional or not?
hahaha, american, just because i haven't... actually really written things for other cultures (a lot of the agents are from other countries, but it's not something that's really brought into light or anything). i mean, my stories aren't actually placed IN america, or even earth--it's always a sort of "it's just like earth but it's not" sort of thing--but they're also not really based on any other cultures (just because culture isn't exactly what i think about, at least for the stories i have now), so the default is america-based. but that brings up a good point; i ought to explore writing about other cultures some more.

14. How do you map out locations, if needed? Do you have any to show us?
no

15. Midway question! Tell us about a writer you admire, whether professional or not!
david sedaris has the craziest life i've ever heard of and i'm very jealous of it, but i know i couldn't write about it as brilliantly as he does.

16. Do you write romantic relationships? How do you do with those, and how “far” are you willing to go in your writing? ;)
most of the time, i don't really think about them. and really, unless it's a plot point sort of thing, i tend to prefer stories where there's just "hints" rather than outright romance, y'know? it's more interesting that way.
but i'm not, like, trying to say that i'm TOTALLY OPPOSED to romance or that i could never do it, haha--i could write a sex scene, sure--but it's just really hard for me to see it happening in canon with any of the characters i currently have, beyond subtext (I ENCOURAGE PEOPLE TO SHIP THINGS THOUGH, IT'S FUN).

17. Favorite protagonist and why!
too hard to choose

18. Favorite antagonist and why!
sir cooksalot, and pretty much all the agents villains. they're all pretty over-the-top.

19. Favorite minor that decided to shove himself into the spotlight and why!
huh i dunno

20. What are your favorite character interactions to write?
tal and ron, punchface and everyone, mitch and zoey, jack and max, jack and belle.

21. Do any of your characters have children? How well do you write them?
no

22. Tell us about one scene between your characters that you've never written or told anyone about before! Serious or not.
mehhhh don't wanna. i'd rather just draw it out later.

23. How long does it usually take you to complete an entire story—from planning to writing to posting (if you post your work)?
HA HA SILLY MEME I DON'T COMPLETE THINGS HA HA HA HA

24. How willing are you to kill your characters if the plot so demands it? What's the most interesting way you've killed someone?
if the plot demands it then i have no problem killing a character, at all. DON'T GET TOO ATTACHED 8)

25. Do any of your characters have pets? Tell us about them.
no

26. Let's talk art! Do you draw your characters? Do others draw them? Pick one of your OCs and post your favorite picture of him!
hahahaha yeahhh i've been answering these with visual art in mind the entire time. other people do draw them sometimes, and i'm thrilled when they do! and nahh

27. Along similar lines, do appearances play a big role in your stories? Tell us about them, or if not, how you go about designing your characters.
uhhh not really. i mean, i do work to try to get my characters in a way that i LIKE, obviously, but they're not key to the story. designs pretty much just pop into my head the first time i think of a character.

28. Have you ever written a character with physical or mental disabilities? Describe them, and if there's nothing major to speak of, tell us a few smaller ones.
RB is too huge to go into buildings, does that count. penclope is totally far gone and delusional (but also happy and harmless), woggum is a psycho (but also not serious and pretty much someone i've forgotten about), matilda is a zombie, max is neurotic, jack is a GOAST, robolady story protag (WHO NEEDS A NAME) is severely depressed and reclusive

that's about all i can think of, though, and now i really wanna make some chars who have disabilities that are more major, because that sounds interesting. i love that sorta thing.

29. How often do you think about writing? Ever come across something IRL that reminds you of your story/characters?
i think about my characters and ideas all the time, which you might not guess since i never... do anything. and yeah, little IRL things remind me of them sometimes.

30. Final question! Tag someone! And tell us what you like about that person as a writer and/or about one of his characters!
no
