Well... see... I fell down these stairs...
OH MAN YOU GUYS
YOU GUYS
I JUST SAW PINEAPPLE EXPRESS AND IT WAS SERIOUSLY AWESOME I'M STILL ALL GIDDY FROM HOW AWESOME IT WAS OH MAN
I've been psyched for this movie since the trailers, and it didn't disappoint me at all. It starts out a little slow, what with the dumb military thing and Dale derping around with his girlfriend and smoking joints and whatnot, but as soon as James Franco's character (Saul) is introduced and the movie starts to catch its stride, there isn't a single dull moment until the end. I thought the characters and the writing were definitely the best parts--very "real," all the dialogue felt completely natural--and the plot was fairly simple, but it worked perfectly. I felt very involved the whole time I was watching. Not to mention the whole movie was funny as hell.
In a weird way, it sort of reminded me of Shaun of the Dead, just in that the main characters are these two deadbeat guys thrown in a desperate situation that they have to fight their way out of and they have all sorts of crazy adventures and bromance along the way (and the humor is kind of similar). If you guys like Shaun of the Dead then you'll like Pineapple Express, I think 8D GO SEE IT IT'S FUN
Just while I'm reviewing things, I beat Trace Memory... actually a couple of hours after I posted my "lol i'm home" entry. :B I thought Hotel Dusk was great fun which is why I decided to buy Trace Memory, since that's supposed to be vaguely connected to it (though I didn't see much, aside from a few gameplay elements. I heard some weird rumor that the captain guy in the beginning is supposed to be Rosa's husband, though. Also, maybe Robbins' Memorial Hospital or whatever was named after the Robbins' in the game? I dunno). I have to say, Cing's writing and storytelling has improved a lot since they made Trace Memory, which isn't to say that Trace Memory's writing is bad, but a lot of times the dialogue seemed to feel kind of stunted and clumsy (I also found myself guessing the plot twists a million years before they ever happened, though I can't tell if that's from the writing or if it was just me. Anyone else have this?). The puzzles were VERY easy, I thought, and really didn't require all the hints and HMM GEE THIS THING LOOKS VERY PECULIAR WHERE HAVE I SEEN THIS BEFORE moments that the game shamelessly handed out left and right.
BUT, that said, it was one of the more charming games I've ever played and I still couldn't put it down until I finished it. When I first saw Ashley I expected her to be this quiet, perfectly-mannered loli genius who reads a lot or something and so now she knows all the answers to everything ever which is an archetype you see a lot in fiction, and while she's often described as "bright" and "nice," she's still very much your average teenager. Naive at times, rash and temperamental others, sometimes confident, sometimes insecure, excitable, emotional, caring--generally just a very human character. I was quite impressed. QUITE IMPRESSED.
Anyway, I'd also recommend checking this out :D It's cheap, it's short, and it's a great deal of fun. A lot of people complain about the length, but personally, I think it works. It's kind of like how Portal was really short, but that length WORKED for it, and having it go on any longer would feel like it was wearing the idea thin. If anything, get Trace Memory just to see the kickass ending it has.
This thread is freaking awesome and I have to share it. So many amazing, obscure games up for grabs, and the download links are still active. I'VE BEEN DOWNLOADING THE THINGS IN THIS THREAD FOR THE PAST TWO DAYS I CAN'T WAIT TO PLAY EVERYTHING OH MAN
