Final Fantasy IV Adventure!!1 Part 3

I GOT A MANAPHY WOOOOOOOOOOOOOO yeah! I didn't use my coupon on anything, though. I just couldn't find anything I really wanted :O Well, except Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time, but they didn't have that. But then I went to Vintage Stock to return Ico since it was all glitchy, and wound up finding Partners in Time there! AND I GOT IT for like, $16 bucks. Awesome. I haven't gotten very far, but it's pretty fun :B Watching Mario and Luigi interact with their past selves gives me so many cavities.

Oh yeah, and hey sup Phoenix Wright anime opening parody dealie if you haven't seen it already. I love this, personally. Although the Old Bag bondage is a little creepy...

ANYWAY enough of that. WHAT YOU GUYS WANT IS SOME MORE FFIV, AM I RIGHT OR AM I RIGHT? When we last left off, Castle Damcyan got blown up by the Red Wings, who were being led by some dude named Golbez. Tellah's daughter/Edward's girlfriend, AKA Anna died, Tellah ran off, and Edward joined and lent you his totally sweet hovercraft so you can go to the Antlion's cave. WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

New weapon for Edwaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrdddddd





One of Edward's abilities, as you might've guessed, is Sing. This just has Edward, well, sing, to inflict Sleep, Stop, or Charm on his enemies (not sure if it affects all of them or not, but I'm guessing it does :O). In this case it's kind of pointless, since his current harp has a chance of charming enemies just from attacking. GOD, EDWARD




Normal attack. He's finally becoming a little less useless. He certainly doesn't compare to Cecil, but that's to be expected, considering Cecil is the tank of the game. He doesn't compare to Rydia's magic, either, but Rydia's magic plays off of the enemies' weaknesses and such, so that's also to be expected. I don't think even Cecil's brute force can add up to that.

But the thing about Edward is that he just doesn't really have a lot of redeeming qualities, battle-wise. I mean, sure, when he attacks he has a chance of inflicting whatever status ailment his weapon is supposed to inflict (currently it's Charm, which can charm an enemy and make it attack itself or another enemy), and his Attack and Attack % aren't too terrible, but that's about it. His HP is incredibly low; Hide is useless and will automatically kick in when his HP gets low, giving you one less character to back you up and also making it a chore to heal him; all of his defence points are low (Defence, Defence %, Magic Defence, Magic Defence %); and his Attack, which I mentioned wasn't too terrible, is only average. At least in this version of the game he doesn't have that USELESS healing ability, where he actually takes potions out of your inventory and makes them less effective (he can heal, like, 10-20 HP). They included that in the Advance version and the non-Easytype version, though. I remember when I thought he was using magic instead of potions, only to mysteriously run out of potions while I was in the middle of a dungeon :D Screw your "healing abilities," Edward.

Oh yeah, that brings me to another topic: Easytype. I forgot to mention this before, but apparently there were two versions of FFIV released in Japan: the regular version, and the "Easytype" version. Easytype is obviously, well, easier, and it also had a bunch of items and abilities removed (because having more items is just TOO COMPLICATED or something). When Square decided to release FFIV to North America, they... well, I guess they just thought we were too stupid for the regular game, so they sent us the Easytype version instead (oddly enough, this came before the Japanese Easytype, and the Japanese Easytype actually had changes that made it even easier than the US version. I'll make note of these changes as we go on). This, combined with Nintendo's censorchip policies, combined with certain backstory-type things getting removed due to space limitations (Kain's background and the main villain's motivation to colonize Earth aren't in the game at all), brings us a much watered down version of the original FFIV. This actually prompted a fan translation of the Japanese script, which I still need to check out.

Anyway, this is also one of the reasons I'm so excited for FFIV DS -- it's said to have ALL the lost material worked back into the game, as well as some extra events. I am a huge sucker for things like these, so YOU BETTER BELIEVE I'M CHECKIN' THIS OUT which reminds me, I still need to pick up FFIII DS. Hmmmmm

Right, so, battle. If you use regular attacks on Antlion, it'll counter with... something, I forget the name of it (Needle?), but it deals about 20 damage to a certain party member. Not too bad, but it can add up, so it's really best to just have Rydia summon Chocobo since that doesn't trigger a counter for some reason. Pretty easy stuff.

Oh, so the counter attack is just called Counter. Why was I thinking Needle? Huh.

So she... wait, so she just... scaled some mountains one afternoon to go check up on Cecil? I mean, how did she even get there? If she got there AFTER the whole thing with Mist, then the mountains would have already reformed, thus blocking the path. Furthermore, townsfolk said she was picked up from "Baron falling down," but Baron wasn't affected by the earthquake or anything, and... I don't know. I give up. Just... Rosa is there. I'm going with it.





Aha, our "wtf is wrong with the king" questions are answered! Now I can rest easy.

Nice view. This game really does have excellent graphics, especially for its time. Actually, Square games in general seem to always be pretty impressive, visual-wise. Compare FFI to II and III. Compare FFIV to V, and V to VI. Then we make the jump from sprites to 3D, and although the character sprites in VII weren't the most awesome things in the world to most people (I liked them, personally), the backgrounds are incredible, even today. Compare that to VIII and IX, though, and the graphical leap is really pretty impressive. But then, if you really want to be amazed, compare IX to X. You have no idea how hard I fangasmed when I saw the commercials and stuff for X, my god.

Usually I don't take shots of me entering a new map, but I saw "Summit" and vaguely remembered something important happening here, so I capped it.

Oh, funny thing about Imp Captains that I forgot to mention. Apparently, some well-known walkthrough author put this rumor in his walkthrough without making sure it was legit, and the rumor was that you can get an item called the "Imp Sword" by winning a battle against 1 Imp and 5 Imp Captains. The thing is, there's no such thing as a battle against 1 Imp and 5 Imp Captains, and neither Imps nor Imp Captains drop an "Imp Sword," since the Imp Sword doesn't exist. In fact, Imp Captains don't drop anything at all. ~*The More You Know*~



A NEW CHALLENGER APPEARS






Aaaaaand initiating MomBomb battle! Heh, it's sorta weird seeing so many party members in battle. I'm used to having three at a time in the later games.

Anyway, just have Cecil, Edward, and Yang attack, and have Rosa using Aim (and healing when necessary) and Rydia calling Chocobo. After a while, she'll transform.



YOU'RE ALL GROUNDED! BLAAAARRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGG

At this point, you should make sure everyone has full HP, because...






Ouch! I don't know why MomBomb exploded into babies, and I'm not sure I want to!

Anyway, just kill them all. KILL THEM ALL. Have da menz and Rosa attack and Rydia cast Ice (the walkthrough I'm peeking at says for her to cast Chocobo, but I think that's pretty excessive, since these things are cake. It all depends on how strong your team is, I guess). No problem.

Man I can barely see what's happening in the thumbnails, everyone just blends into the background so well. IS KAIN STEALING THE CRYSTAL YET GUYS













Man, ya coulda summoned something while Kain was stealing the crystal and all. Or at least heal everyone then and let them gang up or something.

I wonder how he got wounded? Maybe that's when Rosa and Rydia escaped. Man, talk about cold. Or maybe Rydia and Rosa are the ones who wounded him in the first place.

Hahahahahhah oh my god that's awful. XD I bet it's a bug, though... they probably have it set to take a potion out of your inventory every time you get healed, and then didn't make it NOT do that when Edward does it. Can he heal if you don't have any potions left?

Aaaaaa why would they do that! D: God. At least they're releasing the full one now, I guess, but having a nasty suspicious mind such as I do, I have a suspician it's just a revenue enhancing device (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/RevenueEnhancingDevices).
But extra events though, that would be awesome. :V

Side note, this area totally reminds me of that area in Earthbound with all the moles, that's right by... Happy Happy Village, with the cultists.

Yes! If only they had some sort of... ship, that could go up in the air. Then they could just go over the mountain, or around it, and not worry about the trail. BUT WHERE WOULD THEY FIND SUCH A THING?! I GUESS IT'S HOPELESS.

My theory is that they had different people do the normal sprites, the battle sprites, and the portraits.

Ohhhh so Fabul is actually in the mountains. :O I guess that makes sense for an air crystal. And they wouldn't really be able to land their airship in the mountains... wouldn't it suck if they came back and someone had stolen it, though?

That is, like, a pathetic amount of ice. I hope it's symbolic of much more ice than that. Because if not it sems like they could just rappel up the side of the cliff and get around it. Or just, like, stand on each other's shoulders; I mean it can't be more than ten or fifteen feet or so. Especially considering the actual PATH is apparently straight up, they should be able to do that! Or just... climb over the ice.

I see a little tiny lake down there... can you go there? :O

Wait, why are the portraits in a different order?

I... wait, why did they even go up the mountain if their real destination was OVER the mountains and into this nice flat area with plenty of places to land the airship? Was it just to talk to the karate guys? Why didn't they say anything about that?

SEE SEE the Red Wings got there in airships! They could have used their airship!

Hmmm, could be! :O I don't think it's a bug, myself, mainly 'cause it just seems weird that the same bug would be in both versions. I guess we'll just have to see if it's in the DS version to be sure. IT'S JUST A NEWBIE TRAP, THAT'S WHAT IT IS and nope, he can't heal without potions. I learned that the hard way when I tried to make him do his "MPless healing magic" and the game was all "lol you don't have any potions sorry." GOD EDWARD

I KNOW man I hate it when tons of stuff gets left out in the final product, that always bugs me :< And haha, yeah, it could very well be just a money making scheme (I tend think pretty much all remakes are, personally) BUT DARNED IF I'M NOT FALLING FOR IT HAGHLDFGN MUST HAVE FULL VERSION

Yup! :D And sometimes a summon will automatically attack the whole mob, which can be pretty handy! As long as they're all weak against whatever element the summon is, I guess. Though I tend to only use summons for boss battles, sooo |B

I know Golbez was mentioned at Damcyan, but I don't think Rosa has ever said anything about him, which is confusing since she suddenly wakes up and is like "GOLBEZ ATTACKED DAMCYAN HE'S AFTER THE CRYSTALS WE GOTTA STOP HIM." KIND OF MAKES YOU WONDER

I KNOW MY GOD that's one thing that has always bugged me in video games. You're walking down a path and come across some boulders or something, and instead of just climbing over them or going around we have to spend like an hour hunting down some guy who can lend you a bulldozer or some dynamite or SOMETHING EQUALLY RIDICULOUS AND AFGH GJLKDSG JDAFG
I mean, I guess it is good to try and have Rydia get over her pyrophobia, but standing there all like PEOPLE ARE GONNA DIE IF YOU DON'T LIGHT THAT FAHR doesn't seem like the best way to go about that >( YOU PEOPLE I SWEAR

No but I mean, does he have to steal them in a particular order? Or is Fabul just... closer? Not that it should matter, really, I mean, the Red Wings should be able to zip around in their airships and steal both crystals while the PCs are screwing around wandering in the mountains and stuff.

"HEY! Is that our airship? It looks like our airship! D: Edward, you didn't leave the keys in there did you?"

YEAH or you have a rocket launcher or something but you can't take out a locked door with it; you have to go find the key. ADAMANTINE doors I guess. Or a regular fence will be an impenetrable barrier, or an NPC standing in front of something will completely block your access, but you can't just... push them out of the way.

OH so you can change it. :B Okay, that makes sense.

Yeah but you should be able to go around them, at least. :O Like, over the water... you can definitely go over the water with it, and the town is RIGHT next to the ocean. It would be faster than walking!

Yeeeeah but the downside to the hovercraft is that it can only go over shallow water, and I don't think there's any of those shallow water path things that go all the way around the mountain :O They'd get to a certain point and have to use Edward as a floatation device or something. I MEAN

But yeah, I never really understood that, even when I was little :O I'm no hovercraft expert (though that would be a cool thing to be), but it seems like if it's hovering anyway then it shouldn't matter whether the water is shallow or not, and not to mention you should still be able to go through mountains and caves and all that. And plus, it would've been totally awesome if they had met Yang and Cecil just sort of casually pulled up and was like LOOKS LIKE YOU COULD USE A HAND ;D and jumped out of the driver's seat using one arm with the sun reflecting off of his sunglasses and then he walks up and pops the collar on his leather jacket and slicks back his hair what am i talking about
I don't think they ever explain it, though XD It's just one of those unsolved mysterieeeesssss

Maybe it's supposed to be hovering a set distance from the ground, even if there's water over that ground? Or it's powered by magic and it takes the magic from the ground directly underneath or something.
