Hey, Internet! I've got a question.

Sooo, say you find this incredible artist. You love their art, you watch their gallery, you're happy. Right?
Okay, so, let me ask: is there anything that would turn you off of an artist you love, despite the fact that they still draw well? If you find out that the artist is a jerk, can't take critique, updates too much, draws almost nothing but art of a certain subject (models, romance, angst, violence, whatever)/fandom/etc, or even that they love a band (or whatever) you hate/hate a band you love, or whatever else--would you still be able to enjoy their artwork, or would their personality or habits color your views (pun intended lol)? Would this change depending on the type of artist they were, like if they drew or wrote or did music or acted etc?

I'm a really big fan of Stuart Immonen, the comic book artist, but when I got the chance to interview him I found him to be incredibly boring. I still love his art, but it's somewhat disappointing how dull he was. But the opposite can happen a lot more strongly with me. A comic book artist that I thought was alright, and I got to meet them and they're incredibly awesome and interesting people, I will be a lot more interested in their work.

Now as far as hating fandom and their attitudes blah blah blah, most of those childish things happen on DeviantART. DeviantART is a very unrealistic perspective of the artist world.

If an artist is being repetitive, that means the artist is limited in their subject matter and what inspires them. Then they're really not an open minded artist and I'd rather not know them. It's pretty easy detecting that right away.

I guess on a related subject that I've been talking with several people about, Tetsuya Nomura. Nobody take offense. I think Tetsuya Nomura is a crappy retarded unoriginal artist, but I still enjoy his concepts from FFX.

When it comes to artists on DA, what I really hate is finding someone whose art I like, and then going to their journals/artist comments and seeing "COMMENT BEFORE YOU FAV I WANT EQUAL COMMENTS AND FAVS DON'T FAV AND RUN"

After I saw someone leave a note on my page reminding me that I didn't comment on their picture, I decided that every time I see a "COMMENT BEFORE YOU FAV," I'll just...do neither.

If I like someone's style, but their subject matter is boring to me, I'll probably still look at their work, just not with the same level of interest. But if I find out someone has a really unpleasant personality, it's harder for me to enjoy their stuff, because every time I see it I think "yes but you're a jerk". I guess it's worse on the internet because you can't really avoid the personality, with the comments and journal entries and everything. I mean, I think Salvador Dali was a jerk, but it doesn't bother me so much because he doesn't have a little note under each of his paintings say "TODAY I TRIED TO BLOW UP A DUCK LOLOLOLOLOL COMMENT DON'T FAV OR I'LL CUT YOU". The one thing that turns me off an artist completely is finding that they have a sexual kink that weirds me out/upsets me and what I saw as a cute picture of a little rabbit girl is getting them off :< It upsets me much more than blatently sexual images of the same sort of subject. I have no idea why I feel that way, really.

Well, let's see... I think it's really...noble? to be able to enjoy someone's work without liking them as people. But you know, I'd say that if the artist's failings began to detract from their abilities and potential to improve, then I'd give 'em da boot. |D

But I won't lie. Sometimes people do shit that annoys me to no end. So when I see their art I'm reminded of our disagreements. I try not to make this connection too much, though, 'cause...I mean, to me it's kind irrational. Like hating pink because my little sister loved it, I don't know. :B

Ahhh, I hate it when I find out good artists are douches. I go "what a shame" and I'll continue to look at their art from afar, but never approach them like I usually would.

But I'm completely turned off when musicians are dicks. :T

hmmm i think that if an artist drew nothing but a certain subject i'd probably get bored pretty quick. like if i realize that they're ONLY drawing ...i dunno, wolves, i'll probably stop watching them after a while. i need me some variety in my soup.

i figure you really need to TRY to learn a personality of an artist. or, they really need to have a seriously reprehensible personality that they insist on shoving in peoples' faces. normally personality isn't an issue i wouldn't say, but if an artist drew nothing but pictures where they were captioning them with like I HATE WOMEN (lol jack) i'd proooobably not want to deal with that, either.

Not that I frequent DA anymore, but if somebody can't take critique that always annoys me, no matter who they are. Only one way to get better, you know? And I can't stand people who are huge douchebags no matter what they do.

Mostly when the artist loses their balls somewhere and starts whining (*COUGHDEVIANTARTCOUGH*) is when I begin to lose interest. I usually stick around for a bit to see if they get any better, which they may, but at that point, they've most likely lost me. DRAMALLAMA IS NOT ENTERTAINING.

Uhhh. The only other thing I can think of is sometimes...I just realize how obnoxious the person is. Like, I would LOOOVE them and their art for a long time and then go away for a bit, check back, and realize, man you are very annoying how could I like you.

So, yeah, my opinion gets colored. Because, really, you put yourself in your art. So obviously who you are colors your art. And if I can't tolerate you, then I can't tolerate your art.

This has happened to me twice now; a person can draw amazing art, then you get to meet them and try to be friends, only they're nasty, elitist, and end up being complete douchebags. I can still look at a piece of art and enjoy it, but once I learn the "nature" of the artist, it poisons their work for me and I can't watch them anymore. :/

But no seriously, it kind of depends. If I find out an artist has some really reprehensible traits (i.e. misogyny, shota, child rape, rape, incest etc. etc.), then it's extremely difficult for me to enjoy anything they do, even if it isn't related to their kink, since my inner MY GOD I JUDGE YOU SIR >:| doesn't turn off in those cases. But sometimes even then, if they sometimes do art I like (or things that make me laugh, that's pretty important) I won't necessarily take them off my watch either.

Dramallamas don't bother me too much as long as they keep making art I like, since I never read journals and usually skim descs if they look like incoherent whining. :B Updates too much, I just skim through them. It's gotten to the point where I kind of EXPECT people on the internet not to take crit very well, so I usually just ignore whining like that as well, again, as long as they draw stuff I like. :B

Repetitive stuff doesn't bother me too much as long as it's something I'm interested in, but since I jump fandoms so insanely I get bored fairly easily. But I usually don't take people off my watchlist unless they're boring me to tears.

IF AN ARTIST I LIKE RECOMMENDS A SERIES OR SOMETHING, I'M MORE LIKELY TO CHECK IT OUT IF I HAVE THE CHANCE.
Likewise if an artist I dislike recommends it I usually don't bother. I never follow actors so I really couldn't say about that. :B

BUT ESSENTIALLY YES IT DOES FLAVOR MY VIEW OF THEM AND HOW I ENJOY THEIR WORK although not to like a huge extent i guess

When I find out the artist is a jerk, it's really hard to like their work. D: I mean, I will still admit they have awesome skills. I'm a firm believer in "like the artwork even if you don't like the person", but sometimes it's really difficult, guh.

Ohhhhh yeah. D: If they turn out to be a jackass (like, habitually I mean, not just once) then I will move right along. Sometimes the same if they do art/fic of something that really, really squicks me (like, that really creeps me out, I mean, not just something I don't ship) too (and the more of it there is and the more serious (non-crack) it is, the more likely I am to go D: and leave instead of just ignoring it and looking at the stuff I do like).

Same thing if they can't take critique, I guess. And by that I mean they flame reviewers who were polite (flaming trolls is fine :P), delete (non-troll) reviews, or habitually break down in e-tears or something at any negativity (again, non-troll and non-flame; I mean something like, "Minerva seemed OOC when she called Septima her 'little love pumpkin'". And I don't mean just doing that one time (I mean, everyone has bad days sometimes), or being kind of :( when people don't like their fic/art, I mean to the point where you know if you leave anything other than praise it's going to cause drama drama drama). Just not replying to critique isn't nearly so bad, though it definitely makes me less likely to leave a review other than "I liked this" or something similar.

Them doing all one thing, or mostly one thing, wouldn't bother me unless it was a thing I hated (see above). But, say someone occasionally draws really awesome Good Omens pictures and the rest of their gallery is full of stuff for [fandom I'm not in], that wouldn't bother me.

Updating too much? Eh... that might make me take them off my main filter or whatever so I didn't get spammed constantly, but I'd still keep a link and check out their gallery once in a while and comment on stuff I could think of a comment about.

I don't think it really depends too much on what kind of artist they are... though I guess a gallery full of squicky art is more off-putting than a gallery full of squicky fic, because of thumbnails.

Hating something I love, eh... I guess it depends on how they are about it, if they just don't want anything to do with it, fine, but if they're all "PEOPLE WHO LIKE THIS ARE LAME AND STUPID" then that kind of falls under "being a jackass".

Haha this applies to non-internet stuff, too. There's no goddamn way I'm reading anything by Harlan Ellison after his various idiocy that's shown up on Fandom Wank (being an unprovoked asshole to the Penny Arcade guys, groping that woman at that convention). And I'm not too keen on reading anything else by Heinlein after the Lazerus Long stuff was soooo full of incest. D:
