Would you kindly?
Feb. 15th, 2009 11:41 pmHope everyone had a good Valentine's Day. I got Obama trading cards (with a sticker) and chocolate pretzels :B And I liked everyone's Valentinr messages, ahahaha. GUUUUUYS
In other news, I beat Bioshock. Hahaha I was so afraid of that game when I started, but I got used to it and pretty soon I was playing it in the middle of the night without flinching. That's the pattern I have with scary games, actually.
ffffffffffffffffffffuuuuuuuuuuhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh I had all this stuff I wanted to say and now I don't know where to start
Well, first of all, the first hour or so of the game was genius; I don't think I've ever been so immediately engaged by a game, or at least not as much as I was with this. It starts right off with a plane crash and a propaganda-filled submarine ride and just drops you off in a room with a mutant, with nothing but a charming stranger on a walkie-talkie assuring you that he's your friend. And it's great. It's thrilling. That intro and the things that follow shortly after that (finding the female splicer whispering/singing to a crib only to find out that there's not a baby in the crib but a shotgun, rewriting your genetic code, blah blah) are probably why I was so shit-scared of the game when I first started playing. It stayed pretty consistently good for most of the game, too.
But as it went on, it almost seemed like it started to get a little tired. It showed you all this mind-blowing stuff and then it was pretty much just lol fetch quests the rest of the game. Splicers weren't set up in any creepy scenarios anymore, and instead it was just-- you walk in a room, splicers are in there, you either fight them or run, move on. Somewhere along the line the game designers got REALLY INTO having splicers pretend to be dead before jumping up with a "HAHA" and attacking, which cracked me up the first time (namely because it was a group of splicers and they turned the lights off beforehand, so it was like this surprise party of death), but lost its luster pretty quick. That was the only special thing they seemed to do during the last several hours.
But yeah, the all the endings seemed very rushed. And the final boss was just
he was just hilarious, I don't know (and didn't really fit in with the rest of the game, uhh)
I think it's because the voice effects they used on him sounded like they were right out of Sanitarium, so I was making that association the whole time. Not to mention he looked like some cliche comic book character adjfghkahg. And also the things he said, wtf
I'LL GETCHA!!!!!!!!!!
I'LL THROW YOU DOWN!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'VE GOT MORE THAN ENOUGH MOMS TO WATCH MY BACK WHILE I RECHARGE!!!!!!!!!!!!
and then he gets rushed by little girls
SPEAKING OF LITTLE GIRLS GODDAMN I HATED THE ESCORT MISSION AUIDHFGKAKLHJW I hate escort missions SO MUCH i can never do them
Though I did like pretending to be a Big Daddy, ahahah. I was terrified of Big Daddies before I even started the game, but once I actually faced one, it turned out to be... completely non-threatening. And once I got some more upgrades, they weren't even difficult. The way they were advertised, I thought every encounter with them was going to be this apocalyptic showdown, and then my strategy was just like STRAFE IN A CIRCLE AND SHOOT THEM UNTIL THEY'RE DEAD 8| and they'd go down in a minute or something
I still like them, though. I want a Big Daddy figurine.
The Sander Cohen part might have been my favorite. I was loling so hard at everything, especially I WANT TO TAKE THE EARS OFF BUT I CAAAAAAN'T
And the "outburst", hahahahahaaaaa
I did feel a bit sorry for Kyle, though. you didn't deserve that piano torture, pal
or maybe he was secretly a huge jerk, I don't know
I was very impressed with Ryan's death. That whole man/slave speech was already spoiled for me, but I still completely enjoyed it and what it represented. For some reason I thought that was the final boss (I guess the thing I saw kind of made it seem that way, haha), so I was surprised when everything turned to Atlas all of a sudden. I kind of wish the ending HAD been like that, though, rather than Super Atlas flying all over the place arfdgkjahdkg am i the only one who disliked that, did i miss what everyone else got
so, tl;dr: I loved the game! The graphics are gorgeous, the atmosphere is striking, the writing is excellent, the story is great, everything. It wasn't the GAMING MESSIAH that everyone made it out to be, but then again, I get pretty skeptical whenever something is really hyped up like that, so I wasn't exactly expecting it to be. The endings are pretty ehh, and it's ridiculously easy (I played on medium, barely had any problems), but it's still a game well worth experiencing. I GIVE IT A REC
My grandpa's book is out. I'm hesitant to say what it's called, though, because it uses real names and talks all about the family and has pictures of us and so on, and I'm paranoid. It's very sweet, though, and I'm so glad I have itand it's cool to be in a book. Gonna read some more RIIIIIGHT NOW

Date: 2009-02-16 09:16 am (UTC)I've been meaning to take a look at Bioshock for awhile! Good to know I won't be disappointed. It tends to take a really good shooting game to hook me. 8Db

Date: 2009-02-16 09:33 am (UTC)Yeah, definitely check it out! It's not perfect and borrows tons of stuff from System Shock 2 (and Fallout?), but it's still very impressive and great eye candy to boot. I think you'll like it :D
